Here's a cool article over on Blambot that examines the grammar and aesthetics used specifically in comic book word balloons and lettering.
Examples are the need for only single spacing in punctuation, how the crossbar "I" is only used as a personal pronoun and all other uses should just be the vertical stroke version, when to double dash, and how to properly indicate that a character is whispering. I know. Fascinating stuff.

We don't really have a section for resources for writers so I'm putting this here. While doing searches on science fiction short stories I found this really nice site.
East of the Web
It's a really professional set-up with a strong number of monthly hits that takes story submissions from just about anybody as far as I can tell. The standards are high for approval but that's a good thing. I'm seriously thinking of submitting something.

Most are pretty standard typeface for design, but there are also some interesting ones toward the end of the list.

If you do artsy things in Photoshop these days you can't get far without using a texture or two. Soooo...
